Colts may have perfect remedy for Josh Dobbs' brutal Lions start

One can't do and one might can.

The Detroit Lions have a backup quarterback issue. The team had Teddy Bridgewater retire in training camp, and the Lions then brought in Josh Dobbs. Dobbs, however, hasn't started much in his career and hasn't proven worthy of a QB2 spot behind Jared Goff. Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson might, though.

If Detroit needed further proof that it might need to look elsewhere for another backup QB, it should look no further than the beginning of preseason Week 2 against the Washington Commanders. Dobbs had two turnovers within the first four minutes of the game.

He was hit while dropping back to pass and fumbled the ball. That eventually ended up in the end zone for a Commanders touchdown. Just a few minutes later, Dobbs overthrew a receiver for an interception. (By the way, this isn't an article disparaging Dobbs, but simply facts about how good or bad he is. He is a great Tennessee Vol, but those were likely his best football days.)

Detroit Lions could use Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson

Should something happen to Goff, Detroit is sunk. Maybe Richardson could assist the NFC team in the hopes of reaching the playoffs. AR5 hasn't exactly been great in his career so far, either, but he is bigger and even faster than Dobbs (who did run for a 50-yard touchdown after his turnovers, but one splash play and two terrible ones do not make a good quarterback), and with a stronger arm.

If an executive of the Lions was watching Dobbs play, the sweat was likely heavy and nervous. Detroit cannot compete for the playoffs with Dobbs leading the way, even though Detroit has a good roster overall. Richardson, despite his flaws, might be able to.

Richardson also has not rescinded his trade request to the Indianapolis Colts, and he has no path to being QB1, as that spot is helmed by Daniel Jones. Richardson might not even be QB2, as he is in a roster battle with Riley Leonard. The hope is that Richardson never plays because Jones stays healthy, so trading him would at least give Indy some trade value.

Just don't expect a high-round selection for the Colts' backup quarterback. The Detroit Lions might be OK with moving forward with Josh Dobbs, though they shouldn't be for a good team. Richardson could mean less of a drop-off if Goff is hurt.

If Indianapolis could get a fifth-round pick back for Richardson, that might be a win-win for both teams. What won't be a win is for the Lions to keep Dobbs as QB2, but thankfully, that isn't a concern for Colts fans.
