The Indianapolis Colts made a run for the AFC South title last season but came up short after falling off in the back half of the season. Fortunately, the Houston Texans didn't win their third straight division title, but they've already made a move this offseason that they likely feel puts them one step closer to winning their third division title in four years.
On Monday, it was announced that the Texans were trading for versatile running back David Montgomery. This gives Houston a talented weapon in its backfield, something the Colts are going to have to deal with twice a year. That part isn't fun to think about, given how productive Montgomery was for the Lions last season.
The good news, however, is that Houston definitely appears to have overpaid to land the now-former Detroit Lions running back. In exchange for Montgomery, the Texans sent offensive lineman Juice Scruggs, a fourth-round pick, and a seventh-round pick to Detroit, which feels like way too much to give up.
Indianapolis Colts fans hope that David Montgomery trade backfires on Texans
It's not that Montgomery isn't a good player; he certainly is. He finished the 2025 season with over 900 scrimmage yards and eight total touchdowns in his role as the RB2 in Detroit. The production isn't the issue here, though.
The reality is that Montgomery is 29 years old, and the Texans just handed the Lions two Day 3 draft picks to land him. Running backs tend to fall off a cliff as they approach 30, so it'll be interesting to see how this goes for Houston. Colts fans are definitely hoping that Montgomery doesn't bring the same production to Houston and that the Texans end up regretting making this move.
If it does end up working out for the Texans, things will get even tougher for the Colts in the AFC South. If it doesn't pan out, though, it'll be fun to laugh at the divisional foes for making this gamble in the first place.
