Cam Taylor-Britt, who signed with the Indianapolis Colts this offseason, will be suspended for the first game of the 2026 season, the NFL announced on Friday. That shouldn't affect the cornerback's standing on the roster, though. He is likely safe. That means other players probably shouldn't feel secure, though.
Taylor-Britt's one-game suspension stems from an incident in January in which he was arrested for reckless driving and for having no license on his person after being stopped by police. He spent five days in jail, according to The Athletic's James Boyd.
Football fans can and should debate the league's inconsistencies in handing out suspensions for various wrongdoings, but let's address the more specific subject of Indy's 53-man roster. Taylor-Britt is almost certainly going to make it, and he will push others off.

Not that Taylor-Britt is the best player at his position in the league, but he has been solid in his four seasons. More importantly, he previously played with the Cincinnati Bengals and, in his first three seasons with the team, played under defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. The DC is, of course, now doing the same job for the Colts.
And Anarumo likes to work with players he worked with before. Last season, Indianapolis brought in several former Bengals, including Germaine Pratt, who started at inside linebacker in the second half of the year. What should be pointed out is that none of the former Cincinnati players produced at a high level.
Maybe Taylor-Britt won't either, but he has had a good training camp and is penciled in currently as a backup at outside corner. General manager Chris Ballard watched last season as many of his key players were injured, but the depth wasn't very good. After Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward were forced out of action, the cornerback group was weak.
Taylor-Britt will help remedy the same potential problem in 2026, but in doing so, other players will probably be looking for new teams after final roster cuts are made on August 30.
The list likely includes Jaylon Jones, who started all 17 games for the Indianapolis Colts in 2024. Johnathan Edwards, who started five games last year, could also be battling for a roster spot.
Taylor-Britt dealt with a Lisfranc injury last season, which limited him to eight games, but in 2023 and 2024, while Anarumo and the cornerback were still in Cincy, the CB started 29 games and had seven interceptions in those two years. His quarterback rating allowed was a very good 78.0 in 2023, and a not-awful 98.0 in 2024. He's a solid player.
Due to the excellence of Gardner and Ward, when healthy, Taylor-Britt isn't going to start for Indy in 2026. Ward, though, is 30 years old and might not be playing for many more seasons. Taylor-Britt is just 26. Having him evolve into Ward's eventual replacement isn't out of the realm of possibility.
This all means that Cam Taylor-Britt being suspended for one game likely means nothing other than that he will miss one game with the Colts. The 53-man roster isn't going to change because of that.
