Lots of football fans and national pundits doubted the Indianapolis Colts ahead of the season. Just as many specifically didn't think quarterback Daniel Jones would be that good. Through seven games, Indy and QB1 have proven everyone wrong.
The Colts are 6-1, and lead the AFC South by two games. Jones leads the league in total QBR (79.7), while getting the ball out of his hands so quickly that he has only been sacked six times. He's also completing 71 percent of his passes. MVP? Maybe.
This from a quarterback whose first team, the New York Giants, gave up on him in his sixth season and let him go. Jones then spent a couple of months with the Minnesota Vikings before signing with Indy this past offseason. He has since become the NFL's latest redemption story.
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones delivers an unexpected answer
Danny Dimes' success follows the same track set by Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield, and Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith, to name three. Darnold and Mayfield have continued to be good this year, but not Smith.
Still, Smith is well-known for something he said in his first start as Seattle's QB1. Smith took over for Russell Wilson with the Seahawks before Smith was traded to Vegas this offseason. In Week 1 of 2022, the quarterback said in an on-field postgame Q&A with a reporter that people had "wrote (him) off but I ain't write back."
It was a statement stemmed from high-level bravado, but one of redemption, too. Smith had earned the right to say it.
After the Indianapolis Colts' Week 7 victory against the Los Angeles Chargers, CBS reporter Evan Washburn asked Jones what people didn't know about the Colts before the season compared to what people should know now. Jones gave an unexpected answer coming from him.
Jones said, "Sounds like yβall didnβt know much." Goodness. One might have wondered if Daniel Jones had seen a clip of Geno Smith and thought, "I want to do that."

But it was also refreshing to see the quarterback speak with such confidence. He is usually more measured in his responses. He has proven he isn't the narrative that others wrote about him when he was with the Giants. Jones has shown what a good quarterback he can be in the right system.
Luckily, he and head coach Shane Steichen have been one of the best coach-quarterback duos in the NFL. Hopefully, that will continue deep into the playoffs. The way Daniel Jones and the offense is operating, the Indianapolis Colts can beat anyone.
