Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce signed a massive new contract this past offseason, followed that by having ankle surgery, and hasn't practiced since. The team kept pushing back his return date, but often stated the wideout would return before the start of the regular season.
That appears to be the case. The team had to make a decision on Pierce before final roster cuts were made on Sunday, August 30, by 6 pm because otherwise, Pierce may have had to start on the physically unable to perform list, and he would have had to miss the first four games of the season.
To be clear, that could still happen, but according to what head coach Shane Steichen told the media on Tuesday, Pierce's return is soon to come. At least, that was the implication.

Steichen said that Pierce wouldn't practice on Tuesday, but "hopefully" would practice at some point this week before the team plays its final preseason game on Saturday. Practice or not, the receiver isn't expected to play in that game, but having him back before it would be a boon to Colts fans' hopes for the season.
The coach added that Pierce was in a "really good spot," though that is normal Indy-speak, which can ultimately be meaningless. Indianapolis often speaks vaguely about injuries and the status of those players who are hurt, so any positivity from Steichen is a great sign.
Steichen also offered that the team hasn't seemed to have discussed Pierce being placed on PUP at the start of the season, so that could imply the Indianapolis Colts' WR1 is good to go. Or that the team hasn't decided what will happen with the newly rich wideout. Let's hope for the former in that situation.
If all goes as implied, the Colts will have all of their key players to begin the season, which happens against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, September 13. Plus, the offense will have a new WR3 in the person of Keenan Allen. The next immediate concern would be to make sure the offense is run in perfect sync.
Alec Pierce will not have practiced much; Allen wouldn't have either, and quarterback Daniel Jones hasn't played with Allen before. No worries, though, as eventually all that talent and the good play-calling of Shane Steichen should result in success, and, hopefully, a playoff appearance for the first time since 2020.
