The Indianapolis Colts might not be content with their quarterback room after all, and there could be a good reason for it. The Colts have hosted several visits in recent weeks with projected late draft quarterbacks, and their most recent meeting continues the trend.
When the Colts re-signed Daniel Jones, it made clear that he was the one they trusted as their starter for the foreseeable future, and given how he performed last season before his injury, Jones deserves a chance to become a full-time franchise starter in this league.
So while Jones's status in Indianapolis is set, the lineup behind him may not be as set. As it stands, Riley Leonard and Anthony Richardson are slated behind Jones, and Richardson's future status is more unclear than ever. That's why the Colts talking with more college quarterbacks makes sense, and the latest one is Joe Fagnano, a seven-year college veteran out of UConn.
Indianapolis Colts' pre-draft meeting with UConn's Joe Fagnano points to a need for a No. 3 quarterback
Seven years as a college player at any position usually means that the NFL is not on the horizon for that player. That said, Fagnano might be an exception if the Colts, or any other team, like him enough to make him a late draft selection, or at least an undrafted free agent.
Prior to meeting with Fagnano, the Colts have had visits with Luke Altmyer (Illinois), Behren Morton (Texas Tech), Haynes King (Georgia Tech), and Cole Payton (North Dakota State). Now, Fagnano, who split time between Maine and UConn from 2019 to 2025, is the latest quarterback to draw interest from the Colts.
Fagnano's stats are quite impressive over that seven-year stretch, with 94 touchdowns to just 18 interceptions. That ratio type is hard to ignore in any football league. The question is: where do the Colts see Fagnano, or any other quarterback they've met with, fitting on their roster?
If adding depth to the quarterback room in case Richardson gets traded is the reason, Fagnano might be the perfect fit.
The Colts would be following the same line of thinking when they drafted Leonard in the sixth round last year, and he's expected to be Jones' backup. Adding Fagnano would potentially slide him in behind Leonard at the No. 3 quarterback spot, which, all things considered, could be a dream come true for someone like Fagnano.
Replacing Richardson is certainly on the Colts' front office's mind, and meeting the number of quarterbacks they have recently suggests Richardson will be traded eventually. Whether drafted late or signed as a UDFA, Fagnano would bring a lot to the table. His efficiency is elite-level (28 TD, 1 INT in 2025), and he's shown excellent command and navigation in the pocket.
Additionally, while he would be entering the NFL as an older rookie at 25, his lengthy college experience might give him an edge. Fagnano would be an interesting selection for the Colts, but if they're willing to develop him, there's no telling what he might produce down the road.
