Injuries and Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson go together like peanut butter and jelly. You can't have one without the other. So, when he was injured early in the first pre-season game, Colts fans could only lower their face into their hands because they've seen this movie before.
Indianapolis continued to be bitten by the injury bug during practice for the Week 2 preseason game. This injury is a bit different, however. David Ojabo of the Baltimore Ravens plowed full-force into Richardson as he was unblocked, so clearly an assignment was blown.
Ojabo's blow dislocated the pinky on Richardson's right (throwing) hand, leaving the pinky sticking out awkwardly. To his credit, AR5 attempted to throw some passes on the sideline after the finger was popped back into place, but it was a no-go for the rest of the game.
Indianapolis Colts' Anthony Richardson's injury history includes "tap out"
The injuries started during his high school days in Florida with some knee issues. After enrolling in the University of Florida, the 2021 season brought with it a strained hamstring, followed by a concussion, and ended with a torn meniscus.
His rookie season in the NFL brought more of the same as Richardson suffered another concussion before a hard tackle on his throwing shoulder caused an AC joint sprain to end his season early.
Year number two brought more perilous hip and lumbar injuries, causing him to miss more playing time. Add to that the infamous "tap out" game, where AR tapped his helmet to be removed for a couple of plays due to being tired. This did not do him any favors in dispelling his image of being fragile.
Here we are in the 2025 preseason, and the injury bug has bitten multiple times again. Prior to the dislocated pinky, Richardson dealt with discomfort in the same AC joint he injured during the 2023 season.
The Colts signed free agent quarterback Daniel Jones during the offseason and drafted former Duke and Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard during the 2025 NFL draft. Both men saw playing time in the first pre-season game, with Leonard showing promise.
Anthony Richardson will recover from this latest setback and get another shot at leading the Indianapolis Colts on the field. Time will tell when he leads the Colts to victory. However, given the fact that he is prone to injury, Colts fans (and Chris Ballard) are more likely to wonder which will come first: the Colts' first victory or his next injury.
