The hype about the Indianapolis Colts and their quarterback controversy is growing to a fever pitch, as NFL analysts and insiders discuss the future of current QB1 Anthony Richardson. While initially, Richardson was said to have his role as starting quarterback assured for at least one more season, general manager Chris Ballard has openly said that he is seeking competition for Richardson - now adding that Richardson will have to compete to keep his job.
There have been many suggestions for who the Colts might choose to target, but rumors have been swirling - so much so, that Rich Eisen ranked one of them among his top five juiciest rumors in the NFL from last week's combine.
"Whatever went down last year where he got tired, took himself out of the game, and then they benched him, and Joe Flacco went out there and, Cleveland Joe Flacco, the comeback player of the year for coming back from his couch didn't show up," he said. "So they're looking for competition for Anthony Richardson."
And they, apparently, have one name in mind: Daniel Jones.
"Daniel Jones in Indianapolis intrigues me, to say the least," he continued. "That's not a bad idea ... Why? Because he's still young, and he can run it and he can throw it. And maybe he can light a fire with Anthony Richardson. That's the competition I think the Colts are envisioning right now. Or at least I heard!"
Jones started his NFL career with the New York Giants, where he spent six seasons before signing with the Minnesota Vikings. He had a breakout season in 2022, but never quite managed to recreate that level of success. Many of his problems, however, can be blamed on the overall state of the Giants organization. There is the question of whether or not Minnesota will choose to re-sign him, as he will be a free agent this month, along with Sam Darnold, and the Vikings have huge question marks around the quarterback position.
There is the issue of Jones' age, as he is older than Richardson, but he is still young enough to have a long future in front of him if he ends up being successful. The question is whether or not Jones will be happy to take on a team where he might remain nothing more than a backup, should Richardson show the necessary improvement in 2025.
