Former Kansas State star is quietly on the Colts' chopping block

We still have a long ways to go, but the Indianapolis Colts are inching towards what will eventually become their final 53-man roster. The team made some big moves in the offseason, with the most notable signings being of Cam Bynum and Charvarius Ward, and then went on to land one of the most sought-after draft candidates in the first round, with Tyler Warren making it to Indianapolis.

But while there are some players no one will be surprised to see go (like, say, anyone in the tight end room), the bigger question is who might still be cut, without anyone seeing it coming. And for the Colts, that's former Kansas State Wildcats star Juju Brents.

Is Juju Brents' time up?

Brents started his college career in Iowa, before transferring to Kansas State in 2021. His sophomore season in Iowa had been a disappointment, but in Kansas, he saw immediate improvement. He was named a first-team All-Big 12 player as a senior in 2022, and started 27 games with 94 tackles and five interceptions. He was selected by the Colts in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, but his career has failed to really take off in Indianapolis - largely due to injury.

Over two seasons, he's only been able to appear in a handful of games. He had to undergo knee surgery in 2024, and his performance when he was able to remain on the field has not been enough to make up for his inability to stay on the field.

Serious competition

The biggest problem for Brents is the competition he will inevitably face in the battle to land one of the cornerback spots on the roster. He won't beat out Charvarius Ward - let's face it; that's just not going to happen - and with the further additions of Corey Ballentine from the Packers and Justin Walley in the draft, it's frankly not looking good for Brents.

If Brents is going to remain on the roster, he needs to somehow prove that he can remain healthy, and beat out Walley, as Ward and Ballentine are almost surely going to have substantial playing time. With training camp approaching, Brents might find himself quietly shown the door before his career ever really had a chance to take off.
