Kenny Moore II boasts one of the best career storylines of the last decade of Indianapolis Colts football. A former undrafted free agent, the undersized nickel cornerback fought his way up the depth chart to eventually become a team captain.
After nine seasons with the team, Moore decided to move on. He requested a trade, and when no deal materialized, he asked to be released from the team. The Colts obliged, marking the end of an era for their defense.
Over a month later, the veteran cornerback is still sitting in free agency without apparent suitors. There's still plenty of time for him to be picked up, but Moore's offseason gamble is already falling flat.
Kenny Moore still unsigned after Indianapolis Colts release
Moore's production dipped a bit in his final season with the Colts. The 32-year-old suffered an early-season calf injury that held him out for multiple games. He regained his starting nickel defender role after returning, but he seemed to be a step behind his previous form.
Just days before the 2026 NFL Draft, reports surfaced that the veteran cornerback and the Colts had mutually agreed to seek a trade. General manager Chris Ballard apparently didn't find an interested partner before the draft, so the team decided to let the defender enter free agency.
Even after the June 1st wave of league transactions, Moore is still without a team. Unfortunately, it's not hard to see why. At this point in the offseason, most teams are more focused on making high-upside bets on younger players with moldable traits than they are on bringing in reliable veterans.
And if teams are looking for versatile depth in the secondary, Moore isn't their guy. He's almost exclusively a nickel cornerback, playing just 3.5% of his snaps as a wide corner in 2025. He has experience in multiple spots on defense, but teams looking for a do-everything defender are more likely to go for a player with a versatile profile.
Moore's time to land with a new team is still likely on its way. As training camp gets rolling and teams sustain more injuries, the veteran defender will become much more appealing. Even after a quiet start to his time in free agency, it would be surprising to see Moore begin the 2026 season without a roster spot.
Still, this has been a disappointing offseason for a defender who helped lead the Colts' defense for nearly a decade.
