Whatever Philip Rivers was doing at St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama must have been working. In fact, it must have been working so well that at least one NFL team might want him to be their team's head coach. Does that sound ridiculous? Of course, but we clearly live in a ridiculous world.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Buffalo Bills plan on interviewing Rivers for their open head coach vacancy. Buffalo recently let longtime coach Sean McDermott go, but the report on Rivers seems to prove the Bills had no clue what they were doing.

That is meant as no offense to the quarterback. He was always a cerebral player who relied on his high football IQ as much as his physical skill to succeed. That was never more the case than in the limited time he played for the Colts in 2025.

Buffalo Bills stun NFL fans by interviewing former Indianapolis Colts' Philip Rivers for head coach position

He was signed by Indianapolis after starter Daniel Jones tore his Achilles tendon in Week 14. Rivers had three practices and started against the Seattle Seahawks. He wasn't physically capable of scaring Seattle deep down the field, but the game was close because the quarterback knew the offense so well, and he knew how to adjust pre-snap.

All of that after not playing in the NFL for five years. Rivers was retired and coaching in high school.

Philip Rivers becoming a coach in the NFL shouldn't be surprising. The stunning part is that he has never been a head coach at that level. Instead of starting as an offensive coordinator, he is basically making the jump from player to head coach. High school football doesn't really count.

If it did, one might see a few high-end high school coaches make the jump from that level to the NFL. No one would expect that to work well, however. The move is difficult enough from college to the pros.

Still, while many NFL fans will laugh at the news that Buffalo is interviewing Rivers to replace McDermott, the quarterback does have some advantages. He played long enough in the NFL to know what works, and he would likely be able to elevate the already great Josh Allen to another level.

Philip Rivers would also probably run the same kind of offense that Shane Steichen does with the Indianapolis Colts. Rivers played under Steichen with the Los Angeles Chargers, and spoke with Steichen weekly while the quarterback was coaching St. Michael. Steichen's scheme works with the right personnel, and Josh Allen is the right personnel.

Is it likely that Rivers becomes the next head coach of the Buffalo Bills? It wouldn't seem so, but as Buffalo obviously had no clue about how to handle the future after letting McDermott walk, anything is possible.
