Philip Rivers couldn't save the Indianapolis Colts last season, but he might be in a better position to save his alma mater, North Carolina State. Rivers is reportedly close to becoming the next head coach for the Wolfpack, according to On3. Maybe he can even hire some Indy coaches to go with him.
Rivers coaching college football isn't completely ridiculous, of course. He was a cerebral player, and he has coached high school ball. Importantly, he has also coached his highly recruited son, Gunner, and Gunner has committed to play ball for NC State.
This means Philip will go from coaching Gunner at the high school level to coaching him in college. That's just a good move for the Wolfpack, and even high school coaching experience matters here.
Former Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers to be the new head coach at North Carolina State
One of the other choices that the Wolfpack had was hiring Russell Wilson to be their new head coach. That would have made no sense, as Wilson doesn't have any coaching experience, nor does he have the obvious tie to Gunner Rivers.
For a bit of fun, though, let's imagine a not-completely-unrealistic situation next season where Rivers is the head coach at NC State, and he fills out his coaching staff with some current Colts coaches. Indy is likely to make some changes in the offseason, and Shane Steichen and Jim Bob Cooter could be looking for new jobs.
Sure, Steichen might be hired elsewhere in the NFL to be an offensive coordinator, but what if he wants to help his good friend, Rivers, for one season? He could be the OC under Rivers, which would be quite a change from last season, when Steichen's previous ties to Rivers brought the former Los Angeles Chargers quarterback to the Colts.
Cooter might be another option for the Wolfpack. The current Indianapolis offensive coordinator has never been a true OC. He's been under the wing of Steichen for years. As all Indy fans know, Steichen is truly in charge of the Colts' offense, and Cooter is the OC in name only.
Perhaps the same situation would unfold with the Wolfpack. Rivers might be in charge of the offense, calling the plays and leading the offense. Cooter might only be a glorified offensive assistant, though at a level lower than the NFL.
No matter what, most Indianapolis Colts fans probably hope that Philip Rivers works out well as the new head coach at North Carolina State. He seems like a good guy and deserves the success. Who knows? He might just be working his way up the organizational ladder. He might go from high school coach to college coach to the eventual head coach of the Colts one day.
