Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner basically needs no introduction. He is a stalwart leader on the roster, having been named a captain multiple years in a row, and was one of the top 10 defensive tackles in the league last season, according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required).

He was also the Colts' Ed Block Courage Award winner, chosen by his teammates for his performance both on and off the field.

With his leadership, talent, and experience behind him, it's safe to say that when Buckner talks, most people listen. And as the Colts look to have a breakout season, there are certain players expected to help them get there. According to Buckner, one sophomore player in particular is likely to have a big impact.

DeForest Buckner says he is encouraged by Colts' Laiatu Latu's growth

Laiatu Latu had a ton of buzz going into his rookie season and was considered a strong candidate for Defensive Rookie of the Year (DROY). He finished 2024 with 32 tackles, 38 pressures, nine quarterback hits, four sacks, five tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery, all while playing under Gus Bradley's disastrous defense.

With his sophomore season about to begin, many expect big things from him - and DeForest Buckner is one of them.

Virtually everyone looking at Latu expects him to have a big jump in his second season, and he was even named to PFF's All-Breakout Team earlier this year. Latu was already the Colts' best edge rusher, and he seems poised to become one of the best in the league this year.

According to Buckner, it comes down to how hard he's been working to improve.

"It's just his confidence, his rushing, and also not being a one-trick pony -- (last year) was just throwing his fastball," Buckner said. "You know, he's been doing a really good job this offseason getting to his counter move if his first move doesn't work, or a secondary move, and things like that, and continuing to rush and come up with sacks, if you want to call it, in practice. So, it's been fun and encouraging to see."

While there was a lot to be optimistic about in Latu's rookie season, not everything was perfect; his missed tackle rate was high, for example. But just as Lou Anarumo, the new defensive coordinator for the Colts, brought out the best in Trey Hendrickson, he will likely bring out the best in Latu.

The Colts have also put in a lot of work towards improving the secondary, which will help Latu be able to focus more on attacking the quarterback. And during training camp, Latu had played impressively, giving more credence to Buckner's take that he's been growing this offseason.

While the offense could still end up struggling, it looks like the defense could be well-poised to become a strong unit this year.
