There isn't much to be excited about with the Indianapolis Colts quarterback situation. Neither Daniel Jones or Anthony Richardson has proven to be anything to write home about, but for the next year, at least, they're who Colts fans are stuck with.
For now, it appears that Jones will win the QB1 job; Richardson had a setback during OTAs that let Jones take all the reps, and he evidently has made a great impression in Richardson's absence. Indications so far are that he will likely be a serviceable, though not spectacular, QB. Why does this matter? Because it's what landed the Colts a rating as one of the league's least entertaining teams.
Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz ranked each team for its entertainment value at USA Today, and the Colts came in at an utterly abysmal #28. Why? Well, with Jones at the lead, things will likely be less exciting than with Richardson... and not necessarily in a good way.
"The Anthony Richardson rollercoaster was certainly wild, as the Colts chucked the ball deep so frequently that they averaged an astonishing 10.58 average depth of target, according to SumerSports, yet completed a league-worst 56.3% of their passes. That experience seems to have given the stakeholders some indigestion, however, and it seems likely that a blander brand of football could be in store with Daniel Jones threatening to seize the starting reins."Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz
Sure, Daniel Jones might be bland. He might not make anyone all that excited, and Colts fans are probably already looking towards 2026 and the option to draft another quarterback. But in the meantime, the Colts still need to make it through 2025, and a bland, unexciting, but safe QB may be exactly what the team needs.
Richardson is certainly capable of making the big, exciting plays, and obviously, if he is able to gain the consistency and accuracy he's lacked so far, he would be an incredible weapon. But so far, all he's done is give the Colts a whole lot of stress, and right now, what the Colts need is some level of consistency. Daniel Jones can, it seems at least provide that. So sure, Jones might be bland and uninspiring. He probably isn't the future of the Colts franchise at QB. But for now, that bland consistency might be enough to take the Colts to the playoffs for the first time in years - and that's good enough.
