Cowboys pushed toward a Colts move that needs to happen now

The Indianapolis Colts are on the verge of having a locker room issue. The problem is that two players, Anthony Richardson and Kenny Moore, have requested to be traded, so obviously, they don't want to be part of the team anymore. Moore, at least, has now been linked to an idea of dealing him to the Dallas Cowboys.

To be sure, the Cowboys haven't said whether they are (or aren't) interested in acquiring the slot cornerback, but they need a player at the position. Sports Illustrated's Randy Gurzi recently put forth the logical reasoning of Jerry Jones' team sending something to Indy for Moore.

Gurzi suggested that the Cowboys should explore the trade as "Dallas has options when it comes to the nickel with DaRon Bland and Caleb Downs standing out as the best fits. The problem is moving Bland from outside corner to the nickel would weaken their coverage on the boundary. The same is true if Downs moves from safety into a slot role too often."

Though Moore will be 31 years old when the 2026 season begins, he hasn't diminished too much. The issue appears to be that he doesn't think Indianapolis can win a Super Bowl before he retires and wants to go somewhere that he can. Is that the Cowboys? Probably not.

Dallas is an up-and-down organization that hasn't sniffed a title more recently than the Colts, nor do they appear more primed to win a championship in 2026 than Indy is. Both teams have fairly difficult interdivision rivals to go through, and the top end of both conferences is certainly not easy.

The question that should be asked is whether either team would be better with Kenny Moore. Indianapolis may have Moore's replacement on the roster already in the person of Justin Walley. The concern with that is that while Walley was quite good in training camp as a rookie, he tore his ACL in August and missed the season. He hasn't played a real down in the NFL.

The Cowboys, as Gurzi wrote, do need a good nickelback, and Moore would be a good fit. He isn't a long-term option, but Dallas wouldn't worry about that so much. The team wants to win now, and Moore might help them do so.

As far as what the Indianapolis Colts could get back from the Dallas Cowboys in return for Kenny Moore, that might be a late-round pick in the 2027 draft. That isn't a huge return for a player who has been quite good in Indy, but now in his 30s, the cornerback isn't going to bring much value back. What Indy doesn't want to do is enter the season with a player who doesn't want to be there.
