The Indianapolis Colts didn't take a pick at number 47 overall in the second round of the 2026 NFL draft. Instead, general manager Chris Ballard decided he didn't like what he saw and wanted to add more picks on Day 3. Does the move make sense? Not really.
This year's draft isn't highly rated nor very deep. Maybe Indy uses its large amount of Day 3 picks and moves back up into Day 2. The 47th selection was dealt to the Pittsburgh Steelers, along with pick 249, in return for picks 53, 135, and 237. The Colts now have six Day 3 choices, which seems a bit ridiculous.
What is Ballard thinking? Indy fans might have an idea when the team finally makes its first selection of the draft at 53. Meanwhile, some good inside linebackers and edge rushers are beginning to fly off the board. Perhaps Ballard has a trick up his sleeve, but that seems iffy.
Indianapolis Colts trade back from pick 47 with the Pittsburgh Steelers
A number of players are still on the board, of course, and the hope would be that Ballard doesn't keep his growing amount of Day 3 choices. The team isn't going to add quality depth that way, but instead draft gambles who likely aren't on the roster in Week 1.
Maybe Ballard is going to take another quarterback. The team chose Riley Leonard in the sixth round in 2025, and he might be OK. The Indianapolis Colts making a selection at 47 would have probably been smarter, but, of course, only time will tell.
The Colts picks in the 2026 NFL now look like the following:
- Second round (No. 53 overall)
- Third round (No. 78 overall)
- Fourth round (No. 113 overall)
- Fourth round (No. 135 overall
- Fifth round (No. 156 overall)
- Sixth round (No. 214 overall)
- Seventh round (No. 237 overall)
- Seventh round (No. 254 overall)
