The Indianapolis Colts took their time getting to their first pick in the 2026 NFL draft, but when they got there, general manager Chris Ballard chose CJ Allen. The issue was that Indy traded back from 47 to 53, and in the meantime, missed out on players like linebacker Jake Golday. This means Allen has to truly work out.
Not that it is the player's fault. Ballard is the one who must make the playoffs in 2026 or lose his job. Allen simply has to help the team do that. Maybe the general manager, who fans will hear from later, knew he could grab the player he wanted at 53, but that only means more pressure.
The good part is that Allen was well-coached at Georgia and fits what Indy was missing. The inside linebacker can tackle well and be great in pass coverage. He should be expected to be a Week 1 starter, replacing Zaire Franklin, who was traded this offseason to the Green Bay Packers.
Indianapolis Colts moved back to pick 53 overall in the 2026 NFL draft and chose CJ Allen
The linebacker is almost 6'1" and 230 pounds, so he isn't the biggest player at his position. He also doesn't have the frame to add a lot more mass, so how healthy he can stay will be a question.
He does have good technique, though, and understands what a defense needs. He will eventually be the green dot in defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo's system. Allen's high football IQ should vastly improve the Indianapolis Colts defense eventually.
