The Indianapolis Colts did what they needed to do with their first couple of selections. They desperately needed someone to fill in for Zaire Franklin at linebacker, and taking a projected first-round pick like CJ Allen was a big win.
Then, adding AJ Haulcy to the secondary was a huge win for a team desperately needing to get showstoppers in coverage. Now, it was time to focus on the other side of the field, and while adding another interior lineman may not have been the wisest call at No. 113, they could've done a whole lot worse than taking Jalen Farmer.
Barring a trade, the Colts will be right back on the clock just a handful of picks later, thanks to the Michael Pittman Jr. trade. As such, it's only right that they honor him by finding him a potential replacement.
The Indianapolis Colts need to add another wide receiver
This draft class wasn't the deepest at most positions, but there were plenty of potential stars at wide receiver. The Colts missed the boat on Day 2 sleepers like Chris Bell, Germie Bernard, Zacchariah Branch or Chris Brazzell II, but there should still be some value in the final rounds.
The Colts hope that Alec Pierce can thrive as their primary pass catcher, but that hasn't been his role. He's been a big-play specialist who gets most of his production through efficiency and big gains rather than a 'chain-moving' role.
Josh Downs and Tyler Warren will also have to step up to make up for the loss of Pittman, but that might not be enough. Also, adding Nick Westbrook-Ikhine to the mix in free agency may not move the needle either, given that he's been a non-factor for most of his career.
Of course, expecting any wide receiver taken in Day 3 to make an impact might be wishful thinking, but it's not like it's unprecedented. Amon-Ra St. Brown, George Kittle, Tyreek Hill, and Stefon Diggs are all recent stories of pass-catching stars who slipped through the cracks in the first two days of the NFL Draft, so the Colts might be able to find some strong value there.
This team made a big commitment to Daniel Jones in free agency, and they moved on from one of their most reliable pass-catchers to keep his preferred target in town. Now, as a team with Super Bowl aspirations, they must do right by him by giving him more weapons and putting him in a position to succeed, even if Jonathan Taylor will do most of the heavy lifting.
