On Day 2 of NFL free agency, another big quarterback domino indeed fell as the Indianapolis Colts signed quarterback Daniel Jones.
The contract, itself, proves that Jones will absolutely get a chance to compete with Anthony Richardson for the starting spot. In an offseason where the Colts made it very clear that Richardson needed some healthy competition, the Colts went out and gave him just that.
Jones brings a similar skill set as Richardson; mobile, big arm that can throw it deep and a strong frame.
But, how do these two quarterbacks impact the Colts' plans for the 2025 NFL Draft? Sure, they aren't going to end up with Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders while picking at no. 14 overall. But, does this move take quarterback out of the realm of possibilities until next year?
In our latest mock, we answer that question. Let's dive in and see which direction the Colts go.
Does signing Daniel Jones prohibit the Colts from taking a quarterback in the latest 2025 mock draft?
The Colts are lucky enough to see the top tight end in the draft fall to them at pick no. 14. Last year, many fans wanted to see them come home with Brock Bowers. This year, though, Indy gets their guy and finally fixes a position that's been extremely muddled for quite a while.
Warren is the clear-cut, no. 1 prospect at the tight end position and immediately offers the offense a legitimate weapon. He's instantly someone defenses will have to worry about, even though tight ends sometimes take a while to develop.
Warren is different, and the Colts' offense just improved monumentally.
Here's the answer to the big question: no, the signing of Jones does not impact the Colts' potential to take a quarterback.
Look, this is a team that's had a very difficult time figuring out the quarterback position since the retirement of Andrew Luck. This is also a team that is unafraid to carry three quarterbacks, if need be. Behind Richardson and Jones, Alabama's Jalen Milroe can sit and learn for a year (or two).
Milroe offers a ton of upside as a rusher, which fits the bill of Jones and Richardson's strengths. If he can be refined as a passer, maybe, just maybe, Milroe pans out as the guy.
And oh, by the way, Milroe fell to this spot simply because this quarterback class is exactly as advertised. It's not nearly what previous classes have been.
To finish off this mock, the Colts go with a teammate of Warren's back at Penn State in safety Kevin Winston Jr. Indy already signed Camryn Bynum via free agency, but Julian Blackmon is still out there. Regardless, the Colts could use more help in the secondary by way of adding solid depth.
Winston offer a mixture of both instinctual awareness in coverage as well as serving as a tackling machine. He is especially effective in sheer, downhill pursuit of a ball carrier.
