Colts may be hiding their most exciting minicamp storyline in plain sight

What a narrative this would be.

The Indianapolis Colts wanted to get younger and more athletic on the defensive front seven this offseason. The team did that to a degree, but not so much at edge rusher. While 27-year-old Kwity Paye left in free agency, general manager Chris Ballard signed 30-year-old Arden Key to replace him.

Ballard also took George Gumbs Jr. and Caden Curry late in the 2026 NFL draft, and it is the latter that could become the story of minicamp, which takes place from June 9 through 11. The former Center Grove star is just the kind of player that Indy fans want to make their new favorite.

The edge rusher isn't overly athletic, and he didn't even become a star at Ohio State until his final year in Columbus, but he chose to go to the school because he wanted the challenge of practicing against fellow players who were seen as top-end talents. In other words, Curry doesn't back down.

Caden Curry could turn into an Indianapolis Colts star in minicamp

He also won't be outworked. While he has no guaranteed roster spot after not being chosen until the sixth round, he could also turn out to be a late-round gem that every team needs. Plus, he will be extra-motivated to do well for the Indianapolis Colts, as that is the team he followed growing up.

Curry might need to gain more strength to be a force once the season begins, but his road to getting a bunch of reps began in OTAs and can be solidified with a brilliant performance in minicamp. After that, the Colts take a break that will last until July 21, when training camp begins. That means, whatever Curry does or doesn't do in minicamp, the coaching staff will remember for a month.

Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo definitely needs a player or three to step up at edge rusher to help budding superstar Laiatu Latu. He had 61 total pressures in 2025, but no ohter Indianapolis player had as many as 40. That kind of one-player production can cripple an otherwise decent defense.

If Caden Curry can get to 20 pressures as a rookie, that would be a win for a sixth-round choice. That could just be the beginning of a great leap from Indy high school star to fan-favorite for the Indianapolis Colts. No story would be better than that.

The hope is that he makes an impact next week in minicamp. What is certain is that fans will be paying close attention, and Curry will be working extremely hard to exceed expectations.
