Colts' Lou Anarumo problem is becoming impossible to ignore with Giants update

One and...maybe.

The Indianapolis Colts could very well lose defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo after one season. He was hired to fix the defense after spending years as the DC of the Cincinnati Bengals. If there was any doubt about Anarumo's coaching ability, just look at what the Bengals defense was like in 2025 after he left (hint: they were terrible).

Anarumo's group in Indy this season was not statistically great, but the DC also had to constantly juggle who he would play in the secondary. The cornerback group was constantly struggling with injuries, and by the end of the season, Anarumo only had Kenny Moore available as far as presumptive starters.

But the New York Giants have now come calling, and Anarumo might be smart to leave. He has a history of working for New York previously (he was an assistant coach with the team in 2018), and Giants general manager Joe Schoen specifically. Schoen and Anarumo worked for the Miami Dolphins for nearly a half-decade in the 2010s.

Indianapolis Colts might be about to lose Lou Anarumo to the New York Giants

If Anarumo was going to be hired by any team, it would be the New York football Giants, and they have requested to interview him. That is according to NFL insider Mike Garafolo. Oh, and there is a little thing about Anarumo being from Staten Island.

In other words, being the head coach for a New York area football team while working for someone he had previously worked for might be the Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator's dream job. Plus, Indy might be a sinking ship that takes Anarumo down with it.

Perhaps, should the team re-sign free agent Daniel Jones and wide receiver Alec Pierce, and the team's health is better next season, Indianapolis could be a playoff team. But general manager Chris Ballard has only made the playoffs twice in nine years on the job, and he might go two for ten by the end of next year. That might mean multiple changes.

A new GM and, presumably, a new head coach that comes along with the new GM might want a new defensive coordinator, too. Lou Anarumo could cut his potential losses and take the New York Giants head coaching position if it is offered.

Maybe New York is terrible in 2026, and Anarumo is one-and-done with the Giants if they fire Schoen. But if Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo is hedging his bets, the Giants might be as good as Indy at this point.
