The Indianapolis Colts chased the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans in the AFC South last season, and don't want that scenario to unfold again if Indy wants to make the playoffs. While Houston could be even better after various offseason moves, the Jags lost some good players.
One of those was linebacker Devin Lloyd, who left in free agency and signed with the Carolina Panthers. The replacements for him in Jacksonville are not overly impressive. The team does still have time to try to acquire another player to help in 2026, but one recently suggested move would likely help Indianapolis.
In an article about one trade each team could pull off, Bleacher Report's Moe Moton links the Jaguars with Miami Dolphins linebacker Tyrel Dodson. To be clear, this isn't something a league insider is saying could happen, but Moton is only offering an idea. Let's hope he is correct.
Indianapolis Colts should hope one suggested Jacksonville Jaguars move comes true
While Moton writes about Dodson, "After three seasons in a backup role, Dodson has been a productive starter with the Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks and Miami Dolphins," that's not completely accurate.
Dodson was a backup for Buffalo until he got a chance to start in 2023 after players ahead of him on the depth chart were injured. The linebacker graded exceedingly well in his starts that season, according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required), and in free agency after the season, the Seahawks took a chance that he could turn into a long-term starter.
He couldn't. Dodson wasn't productive in head coach Mike Macdonald's scheme, and Seattle was so frustrated with the player that, during the 2024 bye week, Seattle released him. The move instantly helped the Seahawks defense improve.
With Miami, Dodson has gotten quarterback pressure at times, but he has been exceedingly inconsistent in stopping the run and mercurial in his pass-coverage efficiency. There was a reason he was a backup for so long for the Bills, and he's proving that in the seasons since he left Buffalo.
Of course, if Moton's suggestion proves true, Indianapolis Colts fans will likely have no issues with the move. The Jaguars having Dodson on the field won't make their defense better, and a weakened Jacksonville defense is a good thing for head coach Shane Steichen and quarterback Daniel Jones.
Even with many key injuries last season, the Colts were still chasing a playoff spot until late in the season. The team didn't reach the postseason because, ultimately, the Jaguars and Texans were better. For either of those two teams to be worse, they would need to make a move like adding Tyrel Dodson to their rosters.
