Colts could do the unthinkable for the second season in a row

They may have no choice.

The Indianapolis Colts were part of one of the most bizarre events in recent NFL history. Forced by Daniel Jones' injury, they brought Philip Rivers out of retirement, five years after he had played his last down.

Rivers went winless but was surprisingly sharper than most people expected. However, the fact that they had to turn to him raised an obvious question about Riley Leonard, Daniel Jones' primary backup at the time.

Clearly, Shane Steichen and Chris Ballard didn't trust him to lead the way then, so they might feel the same way now. Then, there's Anthony Richardson, the guy they essentially gave up on before his rookie deal expired.

Should the Indianapolis Colts go after another quarterback?

Considering that, and given that Daniel Jones might miss the first month of the campaign as he works his way back from a major injury, the Colts might not be that impressed with their QB competition. If that's the case, they might want to consider throwing Russell Wilson a lifeline.

The Colts felt comfortable putting the ball in Rivers' hand, even though he was clearly out of shape and hadn't played in years. Russell Wilson is still a free agent, and while he's been admittedly bad for years now, he's at least still in game shape.

The New York Jets wanted to sign him, and he's also reportedly weighing some options to do TV. Still, he'd likely throw all of that away if he knew there was an opportunity to start next season, even if it's just for a handful of games.

Richardson has been the least accurate quarterback in the game since he entered the league, and Leonard is far from special. The Colts are under a ton of pressure to get the job done right away, and with a tough schedule to start the season, they may not be able to afford to wait for Jones to get back on track.

Of course, this is a desperate measure, and it would require other dominoes to fall first. They would need to see how their QB2 race plays out in training camp and hope that Wilson is still a free agent a couple of months from now. Otherwise, adding him to the mix now might not make that much sense.

If Wilson isn't up for grabs, they might want to turn to Jimmy Garoppolo or hope that the Pittsburgh Steelers part ways with Mason Rudolph. Neither looks like an appealing choice, but the Colts might be desperate again.
