Round 3/Pick 80
Barrett Carter/Clemson-OLB
You can take this with two modes of thought. They only had one formal interview with Carter, so they either loved him and saw all they needed, or he is off the board now. I am more inclined to think they were impressed with him. For all of Ballard’s faults, he has an immaculate record of drafting linebackers.
Carter is a touch undersized, but has great sideline-to-sideline speed, and the talent to play and/or compete on day one. With E.J. Speed and Grant Stuard both lost in free agency, they must find one that can play immediately.
Round 4/Pick 117
Jordan James/RB- Oregon
A new name that has emerged from their visits. I think the team still has interest in Ollie Gordon, but James could be the safer pick. The staff did attend his pro day, and it is assumed they spoke with him there. Even with the addition of Khalil Herbert, another viable rookie depth piece is needed. James is a bit undersized, but handled a full workhorse load at Oregon. Will need some coaching on pass protection but can run with explosiveness.
