Cameron Mitchell is no longer a part of the Indianapolis Colts. The cornerback, who was signed during the 2025 season, was waived with an injury designation, suffering the same fate as many before him. The NFL can be a tough business.
Mitchell suffered an upper body injury late last week, a day after he had intercepted an off-target pass from quarterback Anthony Richardson. The ball had bounced off the hands of rookie wideout Deion Burks, who was trying to reel in a pass that should have been an easy completion. The play was likely the last good thing Mitchell did with Indy.
Hopefully, he will find another team soon, but he was always facing an uphill struggle to make Indy's 2026 roster. He was a depth piece on one of the deeper position groups for the team. With Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward healthy, and Justin Walley the likely starter in the slot, Mitchell was battling with more proven veterans like Cam Taylor-Britt for a roster spot.

The Colts added Mitchell after he was released by the Cleveland Browns in September last season. At the time, Indianapolis didn't yet have Hardner, and Ward was struggling with concussions. After Mitchell signed, he played in eight games and got one start.
That was in Week 18 when the Indianapolis Colts were basically resting Sauce Gardner, and Mitchell was actually pretty good. He was targeted twice against the Houston Texans and didn't allow a completion due to Mitchell breaking up both throws.
His previous history with the Cleveland Browns wasn't a good experience, though. In 2023 and 2024, his quarterback rating allowed was a terrible 117.2; he also allowed 72 percent of his targets to be completed, and five touchdowns and no interceptions. He allowed three TDs against the Baltimore Ravens in 2026 before being let go by Cleveland.
Of course, the hope is that every player (and human being) gets a chance to do what they love. Cameron Mitchell wants to play football, and there is even a chance he comes back to the Colts if he clears waivers. That is likely to happen, as probably no team is going to have an injured backup take a roster spot.
If he can return healthy before the season, though, maybe he finds a new team. Colts fans are a friendly bunch and probably hope for the best for Mitchell. The hope is that he doesn't sign with a rival and comes back to haunt Indianapolis.
