As much frustration fans might have felt towards the Indianapolis Colts, it could always be worse: they could be fans of the Tennessee Titans. Even as the Colts struggled, the Titans did worse. Indianapolis beat them in both match-ups last season, and the quarterback who was meant to be their savior - Will Levis - ended up being a major letdown.
There was major speculation about where quarterbacks would fall in this year's draft, with few thinking a QB would go #1 overall. Yet others predicted that the Titans would take Cam Ward, making this pick fairly well expected. Yet even with Cam Ward, the Titans will likely keep floundering at the bottom of the AFC South.
Will Levis has already all but been put on notice, and Ward will undoubtedly be better than Levis - or so Tennessee hopes, anyway. But even with an incredible quarterback, the Titans' have major problems. They have consistently made poor decisions in both the draft and in free agency, putting themselves into a major hole with the salary cap by overpaying players who aren't talented enough to justify it, and their records have gotten consistently worse year after year. They came in dead last in the AFC South the past two years in a row, and there's not much reason to think a new quarterback will make much of a difference.
They scraped the bottom of the barrel for their head coach, and the Titans have frankly struggled to find any kind of coherent vision or team philosophy. It doesn't matter how much talent they have if the Tennessee front office can't get things together. Last season, they didn't have a single person on their roster that could be considered a superstar player; now, theoretically, they do in Cam Ward - but one person can hardly be enough to turn around an entire team's fortunes.
So congratulations to Cam Ward. Hope he enjoys languishing at the bottom of the AFC South.
Cam Ward is doomed to follow in Will Levis' footsteps at the bottom of AFC South
