NFL training camps are fast approaching, which means roster cuts are too, until every team has decided on its 53-man squad. The Indianapolis Colts went heavy on free agency depth this offseason. Considering the many holes they had to address, those deals were certainly needed.
That said, not every free agent the Colts signed is guaranteed a lock-down roster spot, leaving a handful of players on the bubble as the Colts get closer to training camp. The majority of the Colts' free agency additions came on defense, including Cam Taylor-Britt.Â
The former Cincinnati Bengals cornerback is one of those defensive free agents fighting to make the cut, but the five-year veteran hasn't secured a spot yet and is one of these bubble players. What works in Taylor-Britt's favor is his connection with Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, but will that past link be enough?
Cam Taylor-Britt's chances of making the Indianapolis Colts' final roster means beating out four others
Anarumo and Taylor-Britt were together in Cincinnati for three seasons before Anarumo left for Indianapolis. Taylor-Britt's first two seasons under Anarumo were the best of his career to date, but he's since trailed off some with inconsistent defense and a penchant for racking up more than enough penalties.Â
The Anarumo connection likely played a role in the Colts' decision to give Taylor-Britt a one-year deal. It’s not the first addition the Colts have made that included one of Anarumo's former Bengals players. Whether or not Taylor-Britt's connection with Anarumo gets him a roster spot is a big question, though.Â
Taylor-Britt won't have it easy; he's competing with Johnathan Edwards, Mekhi Blackmon, Jaylon Jones, and Cameron Mitchell for a spot behind Sauce Gardner, Charvarius Ward, and Justin Walley, who are all considered locks at the cornerback position. Taylor-Britt will have to fend off Edwards, Blackmon, Jones, and Mitchell to be counted in with those top three.
For the Colts, a crowded cornerback room, such as it is, is a positive thing. They have more than enough players to choose from. For Taylor-Britt, while the competition is a positive thing for him, the crowd may not be. That's not to say his chances of playing next season are shot if he doesn't make the Colts' final roster, though.Â
Taylor-Britt is good enough to be picked up by another team, and that should happen quickly if it comes to that. Right now, Taylor-Britt is fighting to stick with the Colts. Among the many position battles taking place on the team this offseason, cornerback is one of the biggest and most competitive to watch.Â
