The Indianapolis Colts went through several backup quarterbacks in 2025. That is what happens when the starter gets injured late in the season, and the presumed QB2 gets hurt earlier in the year. One of those revolving-door backups was Brett Rypien.
Now, Rypien has another new home, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, and with an AFC South rival, the Houston Texans. His chances of making the team might be slim, though.
Still, Rypien has managed to carve out a career for himself in the league. Not a highly productive one, mind you, but one that would make many fans jealous. He keeps getting paid to play football, even while every team he signs with probably hopes he never has to play a down.

Since being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Denver Bronocs in 2019, he has now been paid by nine different organizations. Three different teams paid him in 2025 alone. His time with Indy was spent from October 15 through December 22. He spent nearly two weeks on the active roster and the rest of the time on the practice squad. He didn't appear in a game.
With Houston, he will replace Graham Mertz, who was hurt and placed on injured reserve. But Mertz was only expected to be QB3 if he even made the roster. C.J. Stroud will be the starter, and the backup is Davis Mills. Both are solid options, but Rypien is not.
Rypien did play in one game last year, but that was with the Cincinnati Bengals. He dropped back one time and was sacked. The sack was the only statistic he has recorded since 2023. He likely won't record another in the near future.
The hope is that Brett Rypien lands on the Texans' practice squad, or on some other team's practice squad. At this point, he might be working his way around the league. If you aren't a fan of the Indianapolis Colts and Rypien hasn't played for your favorite team, just wait. He will likely arrive sooner or later. He is just 30 years old after all.
But a quarterback who has four career touchdown passes and nine career interceptions with a passer rating of 59.9 isn't likely to be any team's dream of a long-term starter (or even a part-time starter). He keeps living the dream, however. He manages to keep having his day job be an NFL quarterback. One day, he will probably go into coaching.
