Brendan Sorsby might be the Colts' perfect calculated risk

Should they do it?

The Indianapolis Colts made sure Daniel Jones didn't leave Circle City this offseason. However, as much as they wanted to keep him in town, they only offered him a two-year deal, knowing the risks associated with his recovery from injury.

That raises some questions about his future with the organization. He looked great in the first half of last season and not so much in the second, and with his history of underperformance and a potential regime change in sight, there's just too much uncertainty.

As such, the Colts might want to add another wild card to this already complicated equation. Brendan Sorsby might be forced to enter the supplemental NFL Draft after his gambling scandal cost him his eligibility with the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Making a case for and against Brendan Sorsby for the Indianapolis Colts

Sorsby drew first-round grades after a strong two-year stint with the Cincinnati Bearcats. So, with Anthony Richardson likely on his way out and no major alternative to Jones, should GM Chris Ballard keep an eye out for Sorsby? Let's break it down.

There are more than enough valid reasons not to even consider getting tangled up in these sweepstakes. For starters, he might face a lengthy suspension -- likely for the entire season -- if he does declare for the draft, given that he'd be subject to the league's personal conduct policy.

Even if that's not the case, he made thousands of wagers throughout his collegiate career, including in his own games. He sought help and is reportedly doing well, but that's a bit of a slippery slope. It's just too complicated.

On top of that, there's also the draft capital issue. The Colts won't have a first-round pick in 2027 because of the Sauce Gardner trade, and they might have to offer a second-rounder to ensure getting Sorsby. He'd essentially be their second-round pick in 2027, which would be solid value, but they wouldn't be able to add another player until late in Day 2 of the draft, which clearly isn't ideal.

That said, others might argue that they could get a first-round-caliber guy in the second round, which is always positive. He was expected to be one of the first signal-callers off the board, which says a lot about next year's stacked class.

Sorsby turned the corner in his days with the Bearcats, posting impressive numbers and even more remarkable tape. In just 24 games, he amassed 5,613 passing yards with 45 touchdowns and 12 picks. He also had 1,027 rushing yards and 18 scores on the ground.

He boasts a dual-threat skill set and arm talent that make scouts feel he can be a legitimate star at the next level. The Colts, on the other hand, have a quarterback coming off a major injury who has never strung two good seasons together.

The Colts have fielded competitive teams for years, but to no avail. They know teams can't compete at the highest level until they figure out the quarterback position. And after so many years of swings and misses, they have to at least give this controversial and extremely complex situation some thought.
