Anthony Richardson’s college vs NFL take ages badly after benching

Perhaps life in the NFL isn't so easy after all.

This hasn't been a great week for Anthony Richardson. The former fourth overall pick of the Indianapolis Colts lost out on the starting quarterback job for the 2025 season with Daniel Jones ultimately winning the gig.

To make matters worse for Richardson, comments that he made over a year ago are now resurfacing and making people say, "Oh really?" While appearing on the Club 520 Podcast in June 2024, Richardson said that he believes playing in the NFL is easier than playing at the college level.

"Playing in the NFL? I feel like it's easier than college," Richardson said in June 2024. "For real, for real. In college, you got players, like, they good, and they know they good but they're not as confident. They gotta rely on other players do to this -- for them to do that. In the league, everybody tryna work to stay in the league. Tryna keep their job. That just lets my know, I ain't gotta do too much. I'm gonna do my job and he gotta do his job. It's gonna work."

Anthony Richardson’s past words resurface as Colts QB job slips away

This podcast appearance was recently posted on NFL's Reddit page, reminding people of Richardson's comments after he was benched in favor of Jones. The comment section doesn't hold back with many people pointing out that Richardson lost his job to Jones, another disappointing first-round pick, of all people.

Other Redditors pointed out that Richardson's explanation made little sense. "Most people are just gonna comment with a joke without watching the video. But if you do watch it, his explanation doesn't even make any f***ing sense lol" with another one stating, "Fr I’m racking my brain what point was he even trying to make? Playing in the nfl is easier because I can coast off the other players who are actually good?"

The most upvoted comment as of this writing though was "Well to be fair. He wasn't exactly an incredible College QB either" with the response to that being "I still have no idea why they took him #4. I get he has great athletic ability, but almost every other QB that gets taken high at least had good seasons or stats in college."

This was a narrative that surrounded Richardson as he entered the draft. For all of the people that saw great potential in him despite not great numbers in college, there were plenty of naysayers. Richardson sort of came out of nowhere too, going from an unknown to suddenly being a top-5 quarterback prospect.

As we know, the Colts were enamored with him and took him fourth overall. Richardson looked great as a rookie before a shoulder injury sidelined him for the rest of the year but his second season in the league left plenty to be desired.

Richardson might not still stand by these comments after he lost his job to Jones, that's for sure.
