There is no questioning the talent and skill set that reside within Adonai Mitchell; it's just that the Indianapolis Colts didn't have a place for him on their roster going forward. Sure, there may have been other factors that made Mitchell a poor fit, but his talent was never in question.

Mitchell, who was traded in the trade deadline deal this past season that saw former New York Jets standout cornerback Sauce Gardner come in return, was more a casualty of necessity, however, than an on-field mistake.

The necessity, of course, was the Colts' need for help on defense, and Mitchell was the sacrificial lamb. That's the past, however. Today, Mitchell has a new team and a fresh start ahead of him in New York, but he still keeps past relationships intact, as he recently appeared on Josh Downs's podcast to discuss the trade and where he is today.

Adonai Mitchell believes moving on from the Indianapolis Colts was the best outcome for his football career

Downs and Mitchell were teammates with the Colts, and both were at wide receiver. Downs is still part of the Colts wide receiver corps, while Mitchell is now part of the Jets'. The two former teammates recently sat down on Downs' podcast with his brother, Caleb Downs, a former Ohio State Buckeye and soon-to-be NFL Draft prospect, to talk about Mitchell's trade and how he looks back on it now.

“I feel like that was the reset that I needed," Mitchell said on the Down 2 Business podcast. "Obviously, Indy’s receiver room was crowded. A couple of things happened, you know, that kind of changed the sequence of events out there. So, just getting that fresh start, I felt like that was the best thing for my career. Just getting in the building, bro, they were happy I was there. I was happy to be part of it."

Mitchell may not have played a significant role in the Colts' offense during his time there, though he was talented enough to play a bigger one; he had an immediate impact upon arriving at the Jets. In eight games with them, Mitchell had over 300 yards on 24 catches. The Jets went to him right away, and often with 56 targets.

24 catches out of 58 targets doesn't give the appearance of elite production, but that could be chalked up to an unfamiliar quarterback and time needed to build a connection on the field. Mitchell did, however, average over 12 yards per catch and added two touchdowns as well.

Where Mitchell's future with the Jets lies is still uncertain at this point, but he has a greater opportunity there than with the Colts to solidify himself as a No. 2 option behind Garrett Wilson. Mitchell has everything he needs to do that, and he has the space also — the Jets' wide receiver room is nowhere as crowded as Indy's was.

The Jets gave Mitchell a fresh start; now he has to run with it and take advantage of every opportunity thrown his way. If the Colts end up being a springboard for a very productive career with the Jets or elsewhere, Mitchell can hardly consider his time there a sole disappointment, but a pitstop to success.
