What is the best possible situation for Marvin Harrison Jr.? Certainly not with the lowly Arizona Cardinals. His coaching has been poor, and what development Harrison Jr. might have received is questionable. This is why it makes sense for the Indianapolis Colts to acquire him, but Adam Schefter isn't sure.
To be sure, Harrison Jr. hasn't been good in his time with the team, but the team hasn't been good either. For him to grow as a player, he could find his way to Indy and be coached by a player his father, Marvin Harrison, played with in Indy: Reggie Wayne. That would be a win-win for the player and team.
Schefter was asked about Indianapolis' interest in trading for Harrison Jr. on the Pat McAfee Show, and all Schefter said was, "Wouldn't that make a lot of sense?"
Indianapolis Colts making a move for Marvin Harrison Jr. would make too much sense
A classic Schefter answer, really. He didn't say with a fact that the Colts had interest, only the obvious. We can sometimes forget that NFL insiders are only reporting the news that is given to them. Schefter might not know whether the Colts are kicking the tires on a trade for Harrison Jr., but only saying the move makes sense because it does.
Besides the historical Indianapolis connection between father and son, Indianapolis needs a wide receiver. Alec Pierce is out for the foreseeable future with a long-term heel or ankle injury that he had surgery on in March. Recent signee Keenan Allen missed Week 4 with an injury, and he is well past 30 years old.
Harrison Jr., in theory, is a bigger receiver with speed, but one who appears on the verge of being a 2024 first-round bust. He has diminished in productivity over his three seasons and has only five catches in four games this season. The Cardinals are a rebuilding team that could use draft picks, though Harrison Jr. is almost certainly not going to bring a first-round choice in return.
That is obviously good for the Indianapolis Colts because the team doesn't have a first-round pick in 2027. That was gifted to the New York Jets last season in return for Sauce Gardner. If the Cardinals would take a third- or fourth-round choice for Harrison Jr., the Colts could be a winner.
Indy would hold a fifth-round option on the receiver, and he could conceivably have two and a half seasons left to learn how to be good under the watching eye of Reggie Wayne, himself a former fantastic receiver for the Colts.
If Marvin Harrison Jr. were to evolve into anything close to the player the Cardinals hoped he would be when he was taken fourth overall in 2024, the Indianapolis Colts would have Alec Pierce, Harrison Jr., and, maybe Josh Downs, for several seasons. That could be an iffy group, or the best wideout group in the NFL.
