Quarterback Daniel Jones and the Indianapolis Colts had a tough test to kick off the regular season with a matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. It was always going to be a rough welcome back for Jones, facing a true Super Bowl contender in Week 1.
Jones had to be good enough to both beat Baltimore’s talented defense and keep up with an offense led by two-time MVP Lamar Jackson. Ultimately, the Indianapolis offense never really found its rhythm, while the Ravens couldn’t stop scoring.
Jones’ individual performance was a mixed bag. He had some great moments, but didn’t consistently make the type of game-winning plays we saw in 2025. Let’s take a closer look at Jones’ game.
3 Daniel Jones Week 1 takeaways that could set the tone for the rest of the season
Takeaway No. 1: The opening drive was as good as it gets
The Colts’ first drive of the season was a thing of beauty. Jones completed 5 of 7 attempts, connected with four different receivers, and looked totally in control en route to the end zone. After an extended layoff, Jones’ accuracy and sharpness right out of the gate were impressive.
Although we saw other promising flashes, especially in the fourth quarter, that first drive was the best Jones played all game. Seeing him execute so well after an extended layoff is an inspiring sign for Indianapolis fans.
Takeaway No. 2: Familiar issues popped up again
The game got away from the Colts in the first half as the Ravens raced out to a 31-13 halftime lead. A big reason for that was the porous Indianapolis defense. But Jones’ level of play also dropped off after the opening touchdown drive.
Accuracy and decision-making have been common issues for Jones in the past. Both problems were prevalent again in the Week 1 loss. Jones had a tough time consistently fitting throws into tight windows, and a lack of awareness and vision led to a first-quarter interception.
While it was by no means a terrible game from him, Jones has to avoid these weaknesses if the Colts want to make a serious playoff push.
Takeaway No. 3: Daniel Jones is back
Regardless of the outcome, this week marked a big moment for Jones, who’s playing in his first NFL game after recovering from a season-ending Achilles injury last year. Jones operating in the pocket smoothly and moving around the field well is a massive win by itself.
The next step is for Jones to ramp up and return to last season’s form. If he can do that, the Indianapolis offense will once again be among the league’s best. For now, the Colts should be excited that Jones appears to have recovered fully.
