The Indianapolis Colts are trying to figure out which top prospect would be the best for them, so which prospects can Indy rule out?

With the 2023 scouting combine approaching, it’s time for the Indianapolis Colts and the rest of the league to get a better look at prospects and determine which players are the best fit for the respective franchises. Since the Colts have the No. 4 pick and could be trading up to No. 1, they’ll pretty much have their pick of all of the available prospects. While this is ideal, it can also be a bit overwhelming. However, Indy should be able to eliminate some of the top prospects from its radar.

While the Colts will, certainly scout all positions, their priority should be selecting a quarterback. Whether that’s at No. 4 or No. 1, Indianapolis needs to find a talented quarterback in this year’s draft. Indy’s need for a quarterback is so severe that experts have declared drafting other elite positions that early would result in a bad fit for the prospect.

David Kenyon of Bleacher Report recently looked at poor landing spots for the top 10 prospects.  Kenyon believes the Colts would be a poor landing spot for at least two of the top prospects. Those prospects are Will Anderson and Myles Murphy, both edge rushers. While both guys are elite prospects, and Kenyon believes they can be productive for any team, Kenyon argues that they’ll be bad selections for Indianapolis because Indy has edge rushers and also really needs a quarterback.

Colts shouldn’t draft Will Anderson or Myles Murphy

Will Anderson is arguably the best player in the draft, regardless of position. There’s a real chance that the Chicago Bears don’t trade back because of the risk of missing out on Anderson. He’s a franchise-changing talent and should wreak havoc on offenses in the NFL. Myles Murphy isn’t far behind. However, Kenyon has a point, Indianapolis shouldn’t be selecting either of them.

While the Colts can certainly use a boost to their pass rush, getting a quarterback is far more important. Indy hasn’t been able to find a long-term solution for the quarterback position since Andrew Luck retired. The franchise finally has that chance and there’s no telling when another opportunity like this one will present itself. Indy must capitalize and draft a quarterback.

The only way selecting Anderson or Murphy will be acceptable is if somehow all the top quarterbacks are off the board when Indy gets on the clock. Considering where the Colts are set to pick, that seems really unlikely.
