The Indianapolis Colts have reportedly decided to hire Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator, Shane Steichen, as the team’s next head coach.

After four weeks, 14 candidates, and over 20 interviews, the Indianapolis Colts have decided to move forward with Shane Steichen as the team’s next head coach. This was first reported on Sunday morning by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Fittingly, Steichen is currently the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles and is preparing to face off against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 57.

The Colts haven’t officially announced the hire, and since Indy has been left at the alter before by a coach, it’s understood that nothing is official yet. However, there have been several reports that Indianapolis has let all its other candidates know that they won’t be receiving the job. Shane Steichen is the last man standing in what once seemed like a never-ending coaching search.

Shane Steichen coaching history

As previously stated, Steichen is the current offensive coordinator for the NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles and has been since 2021. Prior to that, Steichen coached with the Chargers from 2014 to 2020. During that time, he had several positions, including offensive quality control coach, quarterbacks coach, and offensive coordinator. The Chargers is also the organization where he coached alongside Frank Reich and Nick Sirianni, two coaches with ties to Indianapolis.

However, it was Steichen’s work in the last two seasons with the Eagles that made him one of the hottest candidates during this hiring cycle. Under his coordination, Philadelphia blossomed into one of the best offenses in the NFL, Jalen Hurts developed into a top quarterback, and most importantly, the Eagles are playing for a Super Bowl.

Now, Steichen will take over a Colts team that is coming off a 4-12-1 season with one of the worst offensive years in recent history. Fortunately, the Colts still have a ton of talent and also the fourth-overall pick in the 2023 Draft, where Indy is expected to pick a quarterback. With Steichen soon to be in charge, the Colts are hoping that they’ll eventually be making their way back to the Super Bowl.
