The Indianapolis Colts haven’t named their head coach yet, so people are speculating about why Indy is waiting and when the team will decide.

Of the five teams that entered the offseason with head coaching vacancies, three have already hired new head coaches. The two teams that haven’t are the Indianapolis Colts and the Arizona Cardinals. Although the Cardinals aren’t playing Sunday, Arizona is hosting Super Bowl 57, so the team has already announced that a coach won’t be named until after the Super Bowl. As far as the Colts, the only info given came from team owner Jim Irsay and he said a decision is coming in days.

“Days” is a very obscure measurement, so that didn’t really help give an idea of the timeline at all, especially for a team that had eight candidates in for a second round of interviews. So really, no one knows when a decision will be announced for the Colts. However, people have begun speculating. As Indy’s search carries on, everyone has tried to guess who will be the next head coach and when it will be announced.

Of all the speculation, the most hilarious theory came from Rodger Sherman, a staff writer for The Ringer. Sherman took to Twitter to say that the Colts will wait until the Super Bowl to announce that they’re hiring Jeff Saturday. A move that will surely receive a lot of heat, announcing it during the big game would allow for the decision to fly under the radar as everyone is focused on good football from the league’s best teams and Rihanna.

Could Colts news dump a Jeff Saturday hire during the Super Bowl?

Sherman was likely joking, but this is actually something that could happen. News dumps are fairly common when the announcement isn’t expected to be popular. There’s no better time for an NFL headline to get overshadowed than the spectacle that is the Super Bowl. Could Indianapolis be planning to do that with Jeff Saturday and the head coaching position?

It’s currently unclear where Jeff Saturday even stands in the race. The only thing that’s certain is that if Saturday is hired, there will be a ton of blowback from fans and members of the media. That was the case when Saturday was named interim head coach, and it would be the case even more now after Saturday went 1-7. Announcing a move like that during the Super Bowl may help with initial reactions, but once the dust settles, the Colts will definitely be under scrutiny.
