After an underwhelming season, Jonathan Taylor recently underwent surgery but should be ready for the Indianapolis Colts in 2023.

After the season ended for the Indianapolis Colts, running back Jonathan Taylor revealed it was a possibility that he could have surgery on the ankle that plagued him during the 2022 season. In a recent conversation with NFL insider, Ian Rapoport, Taylor revealed that he did have surgery on the ankle on Wednesday, January 25. However, Taylor assured Colts fans that he’ll “be ready to go” once the season arrives.

The surgery was described as “an arthroscopic debridement, a minimally invasive procedure to clean out the ankle,” and Taylor said the procedure was “extremely successful.” The star running back also explained that his ankle had no structural damage but it did have “a bunch of junk in there from a bunch of years, just finally had to clean it out and make sure I’m good to go. We finally had the time to get it right, make sure I’m 100% ready to rock.” Now the plan is for him to get back to full strength so that he can help the Colts get back on track.

Throughout the 2022 season, this ankle injury plagued Taylor and was a big part of the reason he didn’t meet the expectations everyone had for him. The injury and the fact that Indy was just underwhelming as a whole. After first injuring the ankle in Week 4 against the Tennessee Titans, Taylor missed a couple of games but returned and tried to play through the injury before the Colts ultimately shut him down after Week 15.

Taylor finished the season playing in just 11 games and rushing 192 times for 861 yards and four touchdowns. It was a significant decrease in production from his 2021 breakout season when he carried the ball 332 times for a league-leading 1,811 yards and 18 touchdowns. Behind Taylor’s rushing ability, Indy won many more games in 2021 than it did in 2022. Indianapolis will hope to return to that formula for the 2023 season.

First, Taylor will have to get healthy, and the Colts will also need to improve their offensive line. If both of those things happen this offseason, Jonathan Taylor’s 2023 season should look more like his 2021 season, a season where he dominated weekly and was one of the league’s best players.
