2. Colts will have a top-five pick in the 2023 NFL Draft

This game was a roller coaster of emotions for anyone watching but especially for Indianapolis fans. On one hand, it’s a natural habit to hope for victory from your favorite team. On the other hand, a loss had a really big benefit on Indy’s draft position. That’s why many fans were wishing for a loss and were excited that Indianapolis gave it to them.

With the loss to the Texans on Sunday, Indianapolis secured itself a top-five pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and the team has a chance to move as high as No. 3 depending on the outcome of the rest of the Week 18 games. While a couple of picks difference may seem marginal, it’s incredibly impactful, especially at the top of the draft when several teams have their sights set on the same prospects. This year, those prospects will likely be quarterbacks.

With a desperate need at quarterback, Indianapolis will be in a great position to draft a top quarterback for the first time in a while. The Colts have been cycling through veteran quarterbacks in the last five seasons instead of drafting a rookie because they’ve never been high enough to have a chance at one of the top QBs on the board. That changed with a loss on Sunday.

By being in the top five, several possibilities opened up for Indy. There’s a chance that one of the top two quarterbacks, Bryce Young or CJ Stroud, could fall right into Indianapolis’ lap at No. 3, No. 4, or No. 5. Also by being in the top five, there’s a smaller window for teams to jump into by trading to get in front of Indy. Additionally, if Indy wants to trade up, they’ll have a better sales pitch since any team that’s trading with the Colts will still be in the top five. This would allow Indy to send a smaller package in order to move up.
