Is Sean Payton trying to send a sign that he’s interested in coaching the Colts?
Sean Payton will likely return to coaching in the NFL next season and it looks like he may be interested in the Indianapolis Colts.
After being retired for one season, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Sean Payton will return to coaching next season. Although he is still under contract with the New Orleans Saints, the belief is that Payton will be able to orchestrate his return to go to any team he’s interested in. The question is, what teams will he be interested in? Surely, several teams will be interested in the Super Bowl-winning head coach.
On Monday, Payton may have revealed one of the teams that he has his sights set on. When the Indianapolis Colts were struggling against the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football, Payton took to Twitter to comment on the game. However, it wasn’t his tweets that caught everyone’s attention but the tweets Payton liked that did. A Colts fan asked Payton to please fix the team, and while Sean didn’t respond, he did like the tweet.
Obviously, this means Sean Payton will be the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts next season, right?
Could Sean Payton be the next coach of the Colts?
Of course, this could just be a pointless like on Twitter but Payton joining Indianapolis is a real possibility. We know that the Colts will have a coaching search this offseason and that Jim Irsay has vowed to explore a wide array of candidates. Will Sean Payton be on Indy’s list? He should be because he has proven himself in this league for years.
In his 15 seasons with the New Orleans Saints, the only team he’s ever been head coach of, he compiled a 152-89 record with one Super Bowl ring. Payton also has nine postseason wins. Something else that should interest the Colts is Payton’s offensive work and especially his work with Drew Brees. With Indy’s offense being so bad, and the team possibly having a rookie quarterback next season, an offensive coach that understands quarterbacks like Payton would be great for the Colts.
The real question is if Indianapolis is what Payton is looking for in his return. Payton has already admitted that he wants to avoid dysfunctional teams and it’s unclear where exactly Indy is on the dysfunction scale. On one hand, the Colts are a team with a lot of young talent that can be competitive. On the other hand, Indianapolis has had a different starting quarterback every season since 2018 and has an owner that seems to be inserting himself into the decision-making processes. Is this something that Payton wants to be a part of? We’ll find out this offseason.
