The Indianapolis Colts were the embarrassment of the NFL after Saturday but that didn’t last long thanks to the New England Patriots.

Saturday was rough for the Indianapolis Colts. What started as a shockingly good game against the Minnesota Vikings resulted in Indy blowing the biggest lead in NFL history. Despite jumping out to a 33-0 lead at halftime, the Colts ultimately lost 39-36. That made them the embarrassment of the NFL. From social media to Sunday morning game day shows, everyone was clowning Indianapolis and talking about how pathetic the loss was. Fortunately, ridicule doesn’t always last long.

Sooner or later, someone else will do something embarrassing and become the main character of the internet for all the wrong reasons. Luckily for the Colts, that someone else didn’t take long to arrive. Even sweeter, it was Indy’s rival, the New England Patriots, that stepped into the spotlight of mockery and became the butt of the NFL world’s jokes.

On Sunday, one day after Indy’s all-time meltdown, the Patriots had an all-time blunder on the final play of the game that resulted in New England losing. Tied with the Las Vegas Raiders with three seconds remaining, overtime seemed inevitable. However, New England decided to run a draw play and the unthinkable happened. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson lateraled the ball to teammate Jakobi Meyers, who then ran backward and attempted a lateral to Mac Jones.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, the ball found Raiders defensive end Chandler Jones, and all that Mac Jones caught was an embarrassing stiff arm as Jones ran the ball in for the game-winning score for Las Vegas.

Patriots out-embarrassed the Colts in Week 15

Hook-and-lateral plays happen all the time in football toward the end of games. Along with hail mary passes, they are last-ditch efforts to try and win. However, considering that this game was tied, this was completely unnecessary from the Patriots. They took an unwarranted risk and it cost them the game. Now it’s an embarrassing moment that New England will always have to live with but also one that they’ll be hearing a lot about in the coming days.

For the Colts, they’ll also have to live with their embarrassing blown lead forever, something that’s etched in history as the largest comeback win for the Vikings. It’s a record that will likely stand for a long time. The previous record was 32 points, and it was set by Frank Reich and the Buffalo Bills back in the 1992 season.

However, this also helps the Colts out in another way. For the longest, it was considered that Indianapolis had the worst play in football history; the play known as the “Colts Catastrophe.” The botched fake punt formation in a Week 6 game of the 2015 season. Coincidentally, it was a Sunday Night Football game against New England. The disaster of a play led to a turnover on downs for Indy, and the Patriots would score the game-winning touchdown moments later. Now, it’s safe to say the Pats have the worst play.

While that’s something that Indianapolis still has to endure, misery loves company, and New England replaced Indy as the team dealing with the most present-day laughs. While both were really bad moments, Indy is hoping that its collapse is overshadowed by New England’s disaster.
