With six weeks remaining in the regular season, the possibility of Jimmy Garoppolo joining the Indianapolis Colts has already hit the rumor mill.

Entering the 2022 season, everyone expected that the quarterback carousel for the Indianapolis Colts would hit a pause with Matt Ryan. After trading for Ryan during the offseason, the expectation was that he would at least be Indy’s starter for the remaining two years of his current contract. With the first season nearing its end, no one knows what to expect in Indianapolis now.

Ryan and the Colts haven’t been the partnership that many were expecting them to be, and Matt Ryan was even benched for a couple of games. Although he got the starting job back, there’s no telling if he’ll make it through the offseason as a member of the Colts, let alone enter next season as the starter.

Someone who had about as chaotic of a season as Indianapolis is Jimmy Garoppolo. After essentially being discarded by the San Francisco 49ers, Garoppolo had to rehab a shoulder injury and practice on his own, as the team decided to move forward with Trey Lance and wait for a trade partner to emerge for Jimmy G. However before the 2022 season started, the 49ers decided to welcome Garoppolo back and entered the year with him as QB2.

It proved to be a necessary move after Trey Lance went down with a fractured ankle in Week 2. Now, Garoppolo is back starting and leading the 7-4 San Francisco. However, Garoppolo will enter free agency after this season, and the expectation for the 49ers is that Lance is still the team’s quarterback.

That’s why Jimmy G has already begun being linked to several quarterback-needy teams, including the Indianapolis Colts.

Will Colts pursue Jimmy Garoppolo in 2023 free agency?

This is a move that’s certainly possible. Indianapolis has shown its willingness to try and fix the quarterback position every offseason by going after a veteran. Who’s to say Jimmy G won’t be next? But also, this cycle hasn’t really yielded positive results for the Colts and that’s why they’re still searching. That’s also why fans are probably hoping Indy turns to the draft for a quarterback instead of free agency.

Indianapolis is entering Week 13 at 4-7-1. Considering how bad the team has been this year, it’s very possible that they could lose out and finish with a really high draft pick. Even if the Colts don’t lose out, they should be high enough to make a move for a quarterback. It’s time to leave the veterans alone and take a gamble in the draft.
