Yannick Ngakoue has started to play like the player the Indianapolis Colts hoped he would be when they traded for him.

This past offseason, the Indianapolis Colts sent promising young cornerback, Rock Ya-Sin, to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for Yannick Ngakoue. Indy desperately needed to address its pass rush so the team did what was necessary to bring in a consistent pass rusher like Ngakoue. Soon as Yannick arrived, he became an immediate fan favorite in Indiana.

Ngakoue quickly immersed himself in the Indianapolis community and endeared himself to Colts fans. With the fan base on his side, all Yannick had left to do was produce on the field. However, his playing tenure in Indianapolis didn’t start as explosive as many had hoped. He had flashed his skill set early but he wasn’t the relentless pass rusher that Indianapolis needed to fix the pass rush.

In Ngakoue’s first five games this season, he had just 2.5 sacks and seven total pressures. Obviously, expectations were higher for Yannick. Fortunately for him and the Colts, Ngakoue has finally started meeting those expectations, playing some of his best football over the last several weeks. In Indy’s last six games, Ngakoue has six sacks and 14 total pressures. Recording at least half a sack in each of those games, Yannick is playing like the pass rusher Indy hoped they were acquiring.

Yannick Ngakoue has finally arrived for the Colts

Unfortunately, this emergence has come with Indianapolis sitting at 4-7-1 and seemingly out of contention for any real winning this season. However, this string of quality games is important for Ngakoue and sets the Colts up for an important decision this off-season. Yannick is playing on the last year of his contract so he’s essentially trying out for all 32 teams right now.

With the way Ngakoue is currently playing, surely Indianapolis will want to keep him. However, the demand for consistent pass rushers is extremely high in the NFL. That means Indy will likely have some competition in trying to sign Ngakoue this offseason. Whether Yannick Ngakoue will stay in Indianapolis or not remains to be seen but it is great to see him currently playing good football for the Colts.
