Matt Ryan was hilariously trolled by his wife after he led the Colts to a win
After rejoining the starting lineup and helping the Indianapolis Colts win, quarterback Matt Ryan was the subject of a joke from his wife.
Sunday was a surprising day for the Indianapolis Colts. For starters, they beat the Las Vegas Raiders, something not many people were expecting in Jeff Saturday‘s coaching debut. Also a surprise, Saturday elected to start Matt Ryan in Sunday’s game. After being benched just a few weeks ago, new head coach Jeff Saturday said he felt Ryan gave Indianapolis the best chance to win. That proved true as Ryan led the Colts on another game-winning drive.
During that game-winning drive, something even more surprising than Ryan starting the game happened: Matt Ryan scrambled for 39 yards. The jaw-dropping run from the 37-year-old immobile quarterback came on a pivotal third down that Indy needed to convert to stay in the game. Two plays later, Ryan threw the game-winning touchdown to Parris Campbell. While the win was great, Ryan’s 39-yard run received a lot of attention because many people simply couldn’t believe it.
As fans were joking about Matt Ryan’s desperate scamper, Ryan’s wife, Sarah Ryan, joined in on the fun, delivering an epic troll of the veteran quarterback. However, Sarah didn’t talk about the shock of seeing her husband run, instead, she joked about a move he made during the run. Well past the first-down marker, Ryan had an opportunity to step out of bounds onto the Colts’ sideline but he instead elected to cut back inside of the oncoming defender and gain a few more yards.
Sarah Ryan joked that Matt made the cutback because he was avoiding “heading towards the bench at all costs.”
Matt Ryan’s wife jokes about him being benched by Colts
This, of course, was alluding to Ryan’s recent stint on the bench. Following Indy’s Week 7 loss to Tennessee Titans, the Colts made the decision to bench Matt Ryan and start Sam Ehlinger for the rest of the year. A move, at the time, that seemed like Ryan would certainly never play in Indianapolis again and maybe not even the NFL. Even though the Colts were just 3-3-1, and Ryan had contributed to some of the losses with brutal turnovers, many argued that the benching was unjustified.
With Jeff Saturday now in charge, he was given permission to play anyone he felt gave Indy the best chance to win, and that resulted in Matt Ryan getting a second stint as QB1 in Indianapolis. So far, he’s making the most of this second chance. In his first game back, Ryan completed 21-of-28 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown. More importantly, he was sacked just once and he didn’t turn the ball over at all.
Moving forward, the offensive line I’ll have to keep protecting Ryan and he’ll have to keep protecting the football. If both of those things are done, the Colts should be able to pull out some more victories, and as Sarah Ryan puts it, Matt Ryan should be able to continue avoiding the bench.
