A new era for Indianapolis Colts football is here and there are questions about whether Sean Payton will be part of the next team.
After starting 3-5-1 this season, Jim Irsay decided to pull the plug with eight games remaining on the regular season schedule. Frank Reich is no longer the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, and many think that either came too soon or too late. In the short term, the Colts brought in former Colts center Jeff Saturday to be the interim head coach. This is a hire that was based on leadership skills to build the locker room back up. Irsay did state that Jeff does not have experience and that he likes that in his coach.
Some would have to say that the Saturday hire gives the ownership eyes and ears in the locker room to see what is actually going on. After Saturday’s eight games as interim head coach, Indianapolis will launch a full-scale coaching search where the team will hope to find a more permanent, long-term answer.
Thinking about the future can make dreams run wild, but who should Indianapolis be looking at to fill the void at head coach? The Colts haven’t been as explosive on offense as they have been in recent years. So they could likely look for another offensive-minded coach. That puts one established name in mind: Sean Payton.
Could Sean Payton coach the Colts in 2023?
The Colts should be calling recently retired, Super Bowl-winning coach, Sean Payton, to see if he is ready to start coaching again. At this point, why not take the shot anyways? As mentioned, Indianapolis has been rough on the offensive side of the ball with one of the best running backs in the league. This year has shown, at times, that even the receivers and tight ends can really play at a high level.
With a potentially new quarterback in 2023 to be molded by a new coach, why not bring one of the greatest coaches in the game? Sean turned a perennially average team into one of the best of the last decade. The Indianapolis Colts are starting to look like a bottom dweller in the league that is just a quarterback away. What better way to get a fresh start than a new rookie quarterback and Sean Payton to lead the way?
It is known that Payton is looking to return to football soon, so could he actually come to Indianapolis? He will control his destiny, deciding where he wants to go when he does come back. All the Colts can do now is to put themselves in the best position to land the future Hall of Famer.
Jim Irsay should be calling Sean Payton now to start discussions of how the organization can get him in for an interview at the end of the season.
