1. Evaluate Sam Ehlinger and draft accordingly

Sam Ehlinger is getting the chance to show the Colts staff, front office, team, and fans what he’s got when the lights are the brightest. He is a second-year pro that was drafted in the sixth round last year by the Colts out of Texas. He gave us a good look at what he can do this preseason and had several plays that left Colts fans with their jaws dropped. Ehlinger will have a big test this Sunday against a solid Commanders defensive front.

Let’s say that Sam balls out this year and gets Indy to the playoffs, or at least give them a chance. I think the Colts should definitely consider keeping him as the starter of the future and continue to build the team around him. There is a good chance, however, that this does not go that way.

With the chance that Ehlinger does not play well, I think the Colts need to package multiple picks or a pick and a player to move up to select a quarterback at the beginning of the first round. The latest mock draft that I saw had the Colts with the seventh-overall pick. That would be a good spot to select a guy like Will Levis (assuming CJ Stroud and Bryce Young had already been selected).

If we can get any of those three guys, we have a roster that is good enough around him to avoid a rebuild. If the plan with Sam does not go as planned, this is the only real option that the Colts have for their immediate and long-term future.
