Dennis Kelly questions why he isn’t playing as the Colts add linemen after early struggles
With the Indianapolis Colts having offensive line struggles, veteran lineman, Dennis Kelly, wonders why he hasn’t gotten an opportunity.
The biggest problem for the Indianapolis Colts this season has been their offensive line struggles. The line has been horrible at pass protection and they have also been uncharacteristically bad at run blocking. Indy has been trying everything to fix it. They’ve been rotating guys, rearranging players’ positions, and recently, adding new linemen into the mix. However, one thing the Colts haven’t done is played Dennis Kelly.
Playing in his 10th NFL season, Kelly was signed by Indianapolis back in May. After missing time in training camp with an injury, Kelly was released during final roster cuts but quickly re-signed as the team worked some roster magic. He’s played in every game except Indy’s Week 2 game but only on special teams. His number has not been called yet offensively, even with the Colts struggling terribly to block.
That’s why it was somewhat confusing when Indianapolis added Ty Nsekhe on Tuesday. Obviously Indy needs help, but some wondered why the team looked externally before even giving an internal option in Dennis Kelly a chance. This was the question Zak Keefer posted on Twitter, and surprisingly, Kelly actually responded.
Using a gif, Dennis Kelly expressed that he’s just like everyone else in the sense that he has no idea why he hasn’t had a chance to play on the offensive line yet.
Dennis Kelly doesn’t know why Colts aren’t playing him
It’s usually never a good sign when players take things to social media. That typically means that things aren’t going well internally. With Indianapolis sitting at 2-2-1 and the way the team has played, it’d be understandable if things were a bit rocky inside the organization. But, the exchange between Keefer and Kelly is certainly interesting and it leaves everyone wondering why Dennis Kelly hasn’t had a chance to play.
The common assumption is probably that Kelly isn’t proving himself in practice. If that were the case, you’d think Kelly would know that and that the team would have communicated that with him. However, Kelly’s response on Twitter makes it seem like that isn’t the case. Additionally, things probably can’t get much worse, so you’d think a 10-year veteran with experience at multiple positions on the line would at least get a chance.
Whatever the reasoning is in Indianapolis for why Dennis Kelly isn’t playing, the Colts need to figure out some plan for the offensive line and it needs to happen fast. Currently, the poor play of the offensive line is holding the offense and the team back from reaching Indy’s full potential. The quicker things are figured out on the offensive line, the quicker the Colts can start playing like the contender they were expected to be.
