The Indianapolis Colts added two new kickers, Chase McLaughlin and Lucas Havrisik, on Tuesday and both have shown great potential.

On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts released kicker Rodrigo Blankenship. It was somewhat of an inevitable move after Blankenship kicked two kickoffs out of bounds and missed a potential game-winning field goal on Sunday against the Texans. The bad Week 1 performance was the final straw for what’s been a rocky journey with Blankenship in Indianapolis.

However, the Colts play another game Sunday, so they had to move on fast. They did that by signing two kickers to their practice squad so they can compete in this week of practice to see who will be Indy’s kicker on Sunday. The two new kickers are Chase McLaughlin and Lucas Havrisik.

While both McLaughlin and Havrisik are young kickers that are early in their NFL careers, they’ve both shown things that are very promising.

Lucas Havrisik is only a rookie, so he doesn’t have any NFL experience. However, he has shown that he has a really big leg. His social media shows him making multiple 70-yard field goals, though, they are in regular clothes without a full operation or defense attempting to block the kick.

As far as official games, Havrisik is the school record holder at Arizona for the longest field at 57 yards, and, he made it twice. He made five total 50+ yard field goals in his collegiate career.

Chase McLaughlin, on the other hand, is entering his fourth season in the NFL. The fourth year of a career that he actually started with Indianapolis. Well, technically, he started with the Bills, then the Vikings, and the Chargers, and the 49ers, and then the Colts. The point is, he played for Indianapolis as a rookie.

After Indy, he would bounce around through four more teams before now finding his way back to the Colts. Through all of that movement, McLaughlin played in 31 games, the majority (16) with the Cleveland Browns. In all of his action, McLaughlin was 67-of-69 on extra points and 37-of-49 on field goals with a career long of 57 yards.

As these two compete for the starting spot, hopefully, one of them will be a kicker for the Colts that won’t put the ball out of bounds on kickoffs and can consistently make field goals.
