After an impressive outing in the first preseason game, the Indianapolis Colts may be able to trade quarterback Sam Ehlinger.

One of the biggest storylines of the first preseason game for the Indianapolis Colts was how impressive second-year quarterback, Sam Ehlinger, looked. After severing as the second-string quarterback last season for Indianapolis, Ehlinger was the third QB in the game for Indy on Saturday and he put on a show.

Ehlinger completed 10-of-11 passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns. He also added four carries for 24 rushing yards. Overall, Ehlinger impressed with his arm and legs and left many wondering if he would reclaim the QB2 spot for Indianapolis.

This offseason, the Colts acquired Nick Foles and reunited him with Frank Reich. Many believe that Foles’ experience in the NFL and in Reich’s system makes him the perfect backup QB in Indianapolis. That’s why he’s currently QB2. But after being outplayed by Ehlinger, some questioned if the spot is up for grabs.

Frank Reich put a bit of water on that fire and said that the team has no plans to make any depth chart changes for quarterback right now. However, Ehlinger’s play could be improving his chances of rising up other teams’ depth charts.

Training camp and the preseason isn’t just trying out for the team you’re currently on, but it’s an opportunity to impress any of the 32 franchises in the league. That’s why after Indy’s preseason game, Ehlinger may now be a trade candidate for the Colts.

Could the Colts trade Sam Ehlinger?

Alex Kay of Bleacher Report recently looked at one player that each team could trade during the preseason and for Indianapolis, that player is Sam Ehlinger. Kay makes the case that if Indy only wants to carry two quarterbacks throughout the season, they will have to cut Ehlinger and hope he clears waivers to join the practice squad or watch him get claimed by another team.

Since teams are always looking for quality backups, Ehlinger could become a priority acquisition if he keeps impressing in the preseason. So instead of losing him for nothing, the Colts should look around the league to see what they could get back from interested teams. Ehlinger may not bring a significant return, but something is better than nothing for a player that Indy might ultimately end up losing.
