On Friday, the Indianapolis Colts released veteran linemen, Jason Spriggs. Considering the timing, this could mean a new player is coming to Indy.

On the eve of the Indianapolis Colts’ first preseason game, the team released veteran linemen Jason Spriggs. Spriggs was just recently signed by the team in June and had been taking second-team reps on the offensive line throughout camp. While the release of Spriggs isn’t necessarily surprising, the timing of the move has left fans wondering, why now?

Although the Colts, and all other teams, have to reduce the roster from 90 to 85 by Tuesday, August 16, it seems a bit odd that Indy would release a singular player the day before the first preseason game. Indianapolis didn’t even give Spriggs a chance to play or hold off on cutting him until Tuesday. Why is that?

It could be that Indy already knew they would be letting go of Spriggs so they made the move before traveling to Buffalo, or, more interestingly, it could mean that the Colts are planning to make a move and wanted to free up a roster spot.

Are the Colts planning to add another player?

It’s safe to say that if Indianapolis was planning to add a player, it would likely be a wide receiver. That’s the position group that needs the most help, especially after reports of Indy’s receivers being inconsistent and dropping passes in camp.

If that’s the case, the most likely option is TY Hilton. Odell Beckham Jr. is also out there and as exciting as that may be, Beckham is recovering from an ACL injury that he suffered in February so he won’t be able to help the team until late in the season.

Hilton is preparing to enter his 11th season in the NFL and fans are still hopeful that it will be with the Colts, the only team Hilton has ever played for. Although he’s older, many still believe there’s a place in this offense for Hilton to be productive on the field and as a leader.

If this is the move that Indy has in mind, we will find out in the coming days. There’s a chance that Indy just decided to randomly release Spriggs the day before the first preseason game with no reason for the specific timing. We’ll see if that’s the guess.
