Grover Stewart, defensive tackle for the Indianapolis Colts, is the latest recipient of a prestigious award given out by the NFLPA.

One of the often-overlooked members of the Indianapolis Colts defense is defensive tackle Grover Stewart. Stewart has been with the team since 2017 and has been starting at defensive tackle since 2019. However, Stewart has been receiving more recognition lately and that’s highlighted by a recent award that Stewart is honored with.

On Wednesday, Stewart was named the NFLPA’s 2022 Black College Football Pro Player of the Year. Per the NFLPA’s official press release, the award is given annually to “one active NFL player who serves as a positive influence in his community, has ties to his HBCU alma mater, exhibits good character and has performed at a high level during the most recent NFL season.”

Stewart joins his teammate Darius Leonard as a recipient and former Colts player Antoine Bethea. Leonard won the award in 2019 and Bethea won in 2018 as a member of the Arizona Cardinals.

Speaking of the honor, Stewart expressed that he was “humbled” to win the award “because it pays respect to the many great HBCU players who came before [him] and paved the way.” He also went on to express that his status as an HBCU alum is something he carries with him saying, “Every time I step on the field, one of my goals is to represent HBCUs to the best of my ability. That’s why it’s an honor to be recognized in this way.”

Stewart attended Albany State in Georgia where he became a dominant NFL prospect. His time at Albany State led to the Colts drafting him in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Since entering the league, he has carved a path for himself in the NFL becoming a force in the middle of Indianapolis’ defense, making it tough for opposing teams to run the ball. Stewart has also been named as a Colts player that will make a surprising leap this coming season.

With all of the surrounding pieces in Indianapolis, Grover Stewart is set up to continue making an impact on and off the field.
